As a painter, I view the process of making artwork in much the same way a stonemason seeks to build a strong, accessible bridge.

Unsurprisingly, I often use a putty knife, plaster trowel, or wire brush to apply paint, building materials or found objects to a canvas or wood surface.  My work reflects the physical nature of applying non traditional materials to create an impasto surface with raised or incised marks contrasting a smooth surface.

Many of my paintings are gesturally abstract, and composed of simple shapes, earth tones, and found objects positioned on a concrete, tile adhesive, or other building material medium. In my view, the hard unforgiving nature of these materials reference the difficult times we live in.  Often, I seek to capture the essence of complex societal events or emotions using these elements.

In the context of world wide social/political unrest and regional wars, it is my intention to create images that communicate, on a visceral level, our shared feelings of isolation, doubt, connectivity, fear, strength, and hope.
